Lugo’s La Mariña region boasts 60 kilometers of stunning beaches that will take your breath away. From Ribadeo to the Ria de Viveiro, this stretch of Cantabrian coast has something for everyone, from locals to tourists, with its majestic landscapes and breathtaking scenery. Here are the most beautiful beaches in Lugo.
- Las Catedrales (Ribadeo) This is undoubtedly the most well-known beach in Lugo. Its popularity has even spread beyond Galicia, to the point that local authorities have had to implement a visiting schedule to reduce the massive presence of tourists during the summer season. At low tide, the sand retreats to reveal rock formations resembling impressive Gothic arches or Baroque vaults. It’s definitely one of the most beautiful beaches in Lugo.
- Os Castros (Ribadeo) This is another of the most beautiful beaches in Lugo, stretching 174 meters long. It can get windy, so it’s important to be familiar with the tide cycle to make the most of this blue-flag beach with its high-quality waters. The trick is to arrive 3 hours before low tide and stay for 3 hours after.
- Arealonga (Vicedo) Located just a stone’s throw from the town of Vicedo, this beach is quite spacious, perfect for long walks. It has a shell-like shape and very white sand. In addition, its waves are calm, and the surroundings are unspoiled. It is situated amid pine and eucalyptus plantations and next to the mouth of the Sor River, making it one of the most beautiful beaches in Lugo.
- San Román (Vicedo) In the same municipality of Vicedo, we find the beach of San Román, a semi-urban sandy beach with a beautiful seafront promenade. This beach is extensive and also has white and fine sand. In addition, it has little surf and its waters are cold and crystal-clear. Its dunes are well-preserved.
- Covas Beach (Viveiro) This urban beach is located in the middle of the Viveiro estuary, so it has less surf, as it is protected and away from the open sea. It presents interesting rock formations known as “castles”. The large number of seagulls is notable in terms of fauna. It’s another one of the most beautiful beaches in Lugo.
- Lóngara (Benquerencia) Located in the municipality of Barreiros, an area filled with campgrounds and little urbanization. It’s the perfect destination for surfing, thanks to its surf. It has 120 meters of length and is mainly composed of white sand and rocks. It also has moderate surf.
- A Rapadoira (Foz) This was the first beach in Galicia to earn a blue flag, which it has maintained since 1987, due to the quality of services offered to its beachgoers. With more than 4 kilometers of seafront promenade, it’s known for the natural pool that usually forms. Children can enjoy the sea without fear of waves.
